PRESS RELEASE - March 8, 2011
Local attorney will address doctors and health professionals in attendance regarding complex legal environment for growing telemedicine industry
SAVANNAH, GA – Mike Conner, managing partner of The Conner Law Group, will speak on the legal environment in the telemedicine industry at the Georgia Partnerhsip for Telehalth (GPT) annual conference March 16-18 at Reynolds Plantation in Lake Oconee .
The conference, entitled “Teleconnect for Better Health,” will attract doctors and medical professionals from throughout the state who are already a part of the statewide GPT network of telemedicine providers or are interested in learning more about the benefits of telemedicine. Conner, who serves as external legal counsel for GPT, will address legal topics such as credentialing and licensure necessary prior to teleconnecting doctors and patients in different medical facilities, special privacy regulations specific to telemedicine and insurance coverage considerations for patients and medical facilities.
"This is a tremendous opportunity to stand alongside some of the pioneers of telemedicine in our state and educate doctors and medical services providers about what they need to know from a legal standpoint to practice medicine in this innovative way,"Conner said. "Telemedicine is making strides every year to improve healthcare for underserved rural communities, and I’m very proud to be a part of an organization like GPT that is at the forefront of this movement to use technology to improve quality of life."
GPT is a rapidly growing non-profit corporation headquartered in Waycross that connects patients and medical providers throughout the state via leading edge telehealth technology. The organization was formed five years ago to promote remote telemedicine and has grown to serve more than 170 facilities in Georgia providing healthcare services, including hospitals, clinics, jails, child advocacy organizations and senior citizen centers.
Telemedicine uses sophisticated technology to link patients in rural or medically underserved areas to doctors and specialists in more urban areas. Telemedical consults are becoming increasingly prominent throughout the country as a method to reduce cost and accelerate doctor response to patients with urgent needs. Telemedicine spans a broad range of interaction which can include patient consults by phone, e-mail or interactive video. The most common applications are found in psychiatry, radiology, pathology and neurology but additional applications are being advanced as the practice become more accepted in the medical community.
